do I need a biopsy

do I need a biopsy

I am 56 years old. I just had a mammogram and ultrasound on left side after my primary doc thought he felt a lump. No one else could feel a lump.

At the mammo center they said that a lump appeared on the ultrasound (not the mammogram) and I needed a needle biopsy. When I went in for the biopsy the radiologist (not the original one) said he reviewed the films and all I had was a fibroadenoma and they are always benign and it had been on the mammogram for the past four years.

All I have ever been told in the past is that I have dense breasts and I had a few microcalcifications.

Should I get another opinion?

Dear suzelle2010, Fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor most common in young women.  A fibroadenoma can be left alone with no treatment if we are sure that it is a fibroadenoma.  If there is any concern - a biopsy of the tumor is done, and only after the sample of tissue is examined under the microscope showing what type of cells are there, can the diagnosis be made for sure.  It is not clear from your question whether or not the biopsy was completed.  If the biopsy was not completed – having a second opinion from a breast specialist who would want to review and compare your prior films putting in context of physical examination and history, would make sense.  If the biopsy has been completed – the information from that will help to determine your next step.
