elevated alk phos levels

My last blood work showed that my alk phos level has gone up to 178.  I finished chemo (4 ac/4 taxol dose dense) a year ago.  My oncologist is going to 'watch' this.  My concern is that I don't know at what point I should be concerned about this. I couldn't get an explanation for what it too high??

Dear sextonak:  Alkaline phosphatase is a non specific enzyme that can be elevated for a variety of reasons such as bone damage or biliary duct obstruction to name a couple.  Normal values will vary from laboratory to laboratory (at our lab the range is 40-150 U/L).  Whether this value is significant in your case would need to be considered in the setting of your situation.  Without knowing all the details, it is not possible for us to speculate.  In the absence of any symptoms, sometimes, doctors like to repeat the test in a short interval to establish whether there is a trend.  There is no “magic” level, which would generally, independently, give rise for immediate concern.  The level must be considered in the context of the situation.
