encapsulated breast tumor

I am a 44 yr old female diagnosed with fybroid cystic breast disease since I was about 19 yrs. old. My mother is a 22 yr breast cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42. She immediately had a single mastectomy without radiation or chemo treatment. Her surgeon at the time recommended no therapy because her tumor was "encapsulated". She has been completely cancer free since. My question is, Is the fact that her tumor was encapsulated and that she had no treatment, and there is no other family history of breast cancer in our family, any less of a chance of breast cancer being hereditary to myself or other members of our family? I do have yearly mammos/exams by my surgeon/and will be having my first breast MRI shortly (appt pending).

Hello,
Yes you are right in thinkinng that having a breast lesion which is encapsulated and has responded well to surgery alone puts you at a lesser risk than in case the tumour your mother had would have been diagnosed to be malignant/ hyperplastic. But still having one first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman's risk. So you are right in getting the annual examinations done. Goodluck.
