fibroadenoma with some atypia

fibroadenoma with some atypia

I have a history of high grade DCIS and I just had a fine needle biopsy of a lump in the other breast.  The result indicates fibroadenoma with some cellular atypia. The report said that the findings are not diagnostic and since there is atypia present, a core biopsy is suggested.  My question is: does fibroadenoma with atypia increase the risk of breast cancer?  I want to leave it if further biopsy shows no evidence of malignancy. But I wonder if the atypical cells can become cancerous at some stage.

Dear azure, Your history of DCIS increases your risk of breast cancer, so further evaluation of this fibroadenoma makes sense.  Recommendations/decisions regarding removal of the lump will need to be based on the information obtained from the core biopsy put into context with your history of DCIS.
