fibroadenoma

fibroadenoma

Hi,I am 45 years old. 2years ago had mammogram with subsequent u/s which revealed 2 simple and 1 complicated cyst. Following yearly mammogram was normal. Recently felt lump in left breast and had mammogram & sonogram with showed 2 simple cysts (of which I did not feel) and then a mass that was not consistent with a cyst and most likely represented a fibroadenoma. The radiologist suggested 6 month follow-up. Only positive family history for breast cancer is a paternal great-Aunt. I have 3 children and breast fed all three. Do not take birth control pills or hormones. My question is do you think it is reasonable to wait 6 months or should I have the fibroadenoma confirmed by biopsy due to my age.
Thanks

Dear dbpfnp, A mammogram or ultrasound can be more or less suspicious, however, being sure of what this is would require a biopsy.  Depending on the degree of suspicion it may or not make sense to check a biopsy sooner to be sure.  You may consider seeing a breast specialist to evaluate your situation, especially as you've had abnormal mammograms in the past, and get their input on the current situation.

fibroadenomas are much less common, as a new finding, in a 45 year old than in, say, a 20 year old. If this is clearly a newly appearing area, then in my opinion a tissue diagnosis is a better idea than a 6 month wait.

(I'd add that whereas I'm a very experienced breast surgeon, I'm not the "official" answerer on this site. There will be an "official" response as well.)
