by newts, Nov 26, 2008 05:15PM
I am 46 years old with a 7mm fibroadenoma (so they think)...my gyn says to have it completely removed, biospy after it is taken out...i am not sure, should i biopsy first then remove if necessary...they were calling thie "tumor" a hypoechoic lesion and now they say it has changed. I have a 37 year old sister who had breast cancer...any help would be appreciated

If it is a Fibroadenoma then it's a benign tumor and there would be no reason to remove it. I think you should see a Surgeon and follow his/her recommendation. Breast Surgery really isn't something a Gynocologist does or treats. I personally would, since the tumor is relatively small, have the biopsy first. Was a BIRADS score mentioned in your mammogram or ultrasound report and was a biopsy recommended by the Radiologist ?? The first recommendation that I would follow would be that of the Radiologist and then perhaps a Surgeon.   Regards ....

If the tumor and it is only 7mm I'd say that personally, if it were me, I would wait for the biopsy first, just as japdip said. I'm 17 with a 5cm (no, not mm) fibroadenoma, and unless your biopsy shows that the lump is cancerous then there is no need for removal, especially since it is under 3cm. But definitely get second and third opinions.
