filroadenoma

filroadenoma

I am 42yo and I had a complete hys.15 years ago , I have been on hrt since (estratest).I have had 2 mamm.one 4y ago and the other a week ago with u/s .This one showed that I had a fibroadenoma tumor in the rt. breast @ about 10o'clock. I was a little worried on how they were so sure w/o a b/o.Should I request one ?Should I get other u/s in three months ? What are some of the options? The big question is it time to try to get off hrt and try something bio.

thanks so much

Fibroadenomas are non-malignant (benign) lumps that feel smooth, and round. They can vary from very small to quite large (5cm). Fibroadenomas are usually distinct on a mammogram and ultrasound. They are most common in women in their teens and early 20's but can happen at any age. If the size is stable and the fibroadenoma is not bothering the woman - there may be no reason to remove it.   Although most physicians feel fairly confident with the diagnosis of fibroadenoma, the only way to be absolutely certain is to biopsy.  A core biopsy will not remove the fibroadenoma.  If it is a fibroadenoma, it may not need to be removed. In terms of the HRT, this is still a controversial subject especially for women with early onset menopause who would otherwise still be pre-menopausal based on their age.  You should have an ongoing discussion with her MD about the risks and benefits of HRT to determine when it should be discontinued.

Altho some surgeons think all fibroadenomas should be removed, many others disagree and just follow them. I have several that we follow with yearly ultrasound. (I also get 2 mammos a year but that's for my calcifications.) If you can feel the lumps you can also monitor them monthly and make an appointment if they change. It's frustrating because we don't know if they're benign or not, but the doctors don't seem to worry about them at all. On the other hand, biopsies cause scar tissue which makes the area harder to read and complicates further mammos, so you really don't want to get a biopsy if it's not necessary.

I was also diagnosed with a fibroadenoma after repeat mammo and u/s in July.  Radiologist said they have these biopsied to be 100% sure.  I had a fine needle biopsy yesterday and prelim results - pathologist was in the room - was a benign fibroadenoma.  Said there were cells around it and that surgeons generally recommend removal as cells tend to grow fast.  I was able to see a breast surgeon and I will be making an appointment to have it removed.  It is done as an out patient procedure.
