Dear val0214:  During surgery, the tissue of concern is removed (either via biopsy, lumpectomy or mastectomy).  After surgery, the tissue is sent to the pathology laboratory.  The tissue is stained and examined under a microscope by a pathologist.  The cells are then determined to be normal or abnormal (cancerous) and then are further described to help define treatment.

During surgery be it biopsy or lumpectomy the tissue is sent to the Pathology Lab where slides are made and studied to learn the types of cells contained in the tissue. The different cells seen will be identified as normal or abnormal.
