hypoechoic lesion/small cyst

hypoechoic lesion/small cyst

I received the report from my mammo and ultrasound and my PCP told me I had a 3mm hypoechoic lesion and a small cyst.  My surgeon (westchester Medical) will not return until Monday.  I am 55 years old.  My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 45 and died at 50.  I do not know what a hypoechoic lesion is and I was not told the size of the small cyst.  I am so nervous - I had my uterus out at age 30 due to a large cyst- just had my ovaries out due to cysts. Also have polycystic liver disease - no more room fopr the cysts in my left lobe to grow!!  Not sure if having so many cyst is more of a concern now that  one is in my left breast.  It did not show on the mammo - only the ultrasound.  I do not want to wait and watch - I am so anxious - thanks for any help- kathyh

Hi,
Well the fact is that a hypoecoic lesion could be either a cyst or a beign tumour or a malignant tumour. A hypoechoic lesion with smooth walls would be a cyst usually, one with irregular edges and would be malignant usually and one with smooth walls could be benign. But only your doctor can tell you definitively and for that he would need a biopsy. If the cyst is painful the fluid from will have to be removed also. Maybe you could ask your surgeon to recommend someone else. Or else discuss the situation with your physician and see whetehr you can wait till your surgeon gets back.
