Dear rolly, You may be describing the Montgomery's glands, which are little bumps around the areola that look like goose pimples.  It sounds like an irritation that reddens and dry's out.  Without seeing it and being able to ask more questions it is difficult to help more.  However, from what you write it does not sound like a cancer problem, more like a skin condition.  If you continue to be concerned perhaps a dermatologist could shed more light on evaluating for sure what this is.

actually, they are not likely milk glands, but "Montgomery's glands" which are like the sebaceous or oil glands in the skin everywhere. They are normal, and harmless. In some people they are more prominent than in others. They enlarge some during pregnancy. They actually may not be infected: it's normal to be whitish and even sometimes to produce a bit of whitish material. Of course, since they can't be seen over the internet, you need to rely on your doc for a correct assessement.
