invasive lobular cancer

I underwent a lumpectomy in August for DCIS and the surgeon managed to get clean margins on that but in doing so cut into another cancer in the same quadrant, invasive lobular carcinoma, that didn't show up on the mammogram. I've since undergone an MRI which doesn't show any further areas of it in the same breast but the surgeon needs to go back in and get more tissue for clean margins on that cancer and do a sentinal node biopsy. I've been worried about having radiation since I was diagnosed in July as I've had CFIDS for 19 years and am concerned about how that would affect my immune system. I now seem to be facing the same questions again, only now I'm dealing with node status as well. I'm wondering if a mastectomy at this point is the better alternative. My surgeon says both cancers were in the same quadrant and quite close together so feels a reexcision is the best course. If they were in different quadrants she would have recommeded a mastectomy. Is that the normal course with this situation?

Dear news24:  There is no absolute right or wrong answer in these situations.   In many cases, it can boil down to the woman’s choice.  If you are concerned about radiation, a mastectomy would likely eliminate the need for radiation.  However, a mastectomy is a bigger procedure and you may need to consider reconstruction or prosthesis.  You may want to rediscuss this with your surgeon and if you are not comfortable, consider a second surgical opinion from a breast surgeon.  You may also want to meet with a radiation oncologist to discuss the pros and cons of radiation therapy.
