Some of this sounds similar to what I have been experiencing.  First I noticed a scaling on top of my nipple, no itching, no redness, no discharge.  However, it did not respond well to lanolin, so I made an appointment with my doctor. He prescribed a steroid cream, that seemed to take care of the scaling/peeling.  However, I noticed that the nipple got smaller and harder in response to the cream (probably because of the steroids) and became a lighter pink.  If I stopped the cream, a very light peeling would begin.  I thought it could be a fungal infection and treated it with tinactin, to which it responded very well. The nipple still sometimes appears drier than the other one.  But on exam (by two doctors), it seems just normal and much like the other side.  My doctor ordered a mammogram and sonogram, both of which were negative for any masses at all.  Now I have a localized burning/tenderness just outside of the areola...my doctor thinks it's fibrous tissue.  I'm about to start my period, so will wait to see if it subsides after my cycle.  Very frustrating having no definitive answers.

your problem is similar with mine. i have this itch around my left areola. had it for more than a year. my doctor made me take antibiotics for fungal infection. its an on & off problem which made me think that it hasnt been resolved with the medication. i havent had a mammogram yet since i am 39 years old but im planning to take one soon. iam really worried & stress because iam thinking of the worst. been reading articles about pagets disease & dcis. i hope its just my paranonia thats attacking me and not the real world of cancer.

I have the exact same problem with my areola.  They are very very itchy and the skin is turning white and scaly.  I have it on both nipples.  No amount of lotion is helping.  I dont have a doctor appointment for a few weeks.  I was very worried because I have Scleroderma on my foot and was afraid it was on my breasts now too.

Dear teepee27:  Skin on the breast and areola is not unlike skin anywhere else on the body and is subject to all sorts of skin abnormalities.  Without examination, it is impossible for us to speculate on what this could be.  As it has not responded to clotrimazole, it seems as though it is not a fungus.  As this has been present for a month, you might benefit from seeing your doctor who can take and look and make appropriate treatment recommendations.
