Nodules or lumps with irregular edges are more worrisome than ones with smooth, regular borders. Some other terms that may be used are: radiating, star-shaped, stellate, or haphazard. However, there are some benign conditions that can also have an irregular appearance.
As japdip indicated, biopsy is the only way to tell if a particular finding is benign or malignant.
The waiting for results is difficult for everyone. Our thoughts will be with your sister and your family.

Thank you for your reply, yes biopsy is tomorrow, as the ultrasound was done late friday afternoon and the doctor was on day off today. The lady doing the ultrasound suggested it did not look good and she made the comment of the 'jagged' edge and the fact it has good blood flow??? And from what I hae read / googled.. I keep reading that cancerous lumps appear to be jagged and uneven but cysts are rounded???
This is actually about my sister, she, along with our family, are just going crazy with worry... it's horrile.. I just pray all we be fine.
Are you from a medical profession or do you just know alot about this type of issue... Thank you again..
I'm not sure I've ever heard of a lump being described as "jagged" .... lumps seem to have almost any shape and most of these shapes mean nothing in particular. I'd be interested in what was stated in the US report as there must have been some indication as to the nature of the lump and also some type of recommendation for either additional testing or even a biopsy. In the end a biopsy is the ONLY way to determine if a lump or area is benign or malignant. Regards ....
