Is it possible to tell the difference between fat necrosis as a cause for a breast lump? I developed a lump after having some bruising in my breast ( no memory of injuring it though, and have read that it is common to do so. How long do fat necrosis lumps last?

The bruise can indeed be a fat necrosis or a hematoma (which is blood collection underneath the skin), however, a lack of history of trauma favors the former than the latter.  Fat necrosis may resolve by itself but the time varies with every person.  It may take several weeks to for this to heal ( say about 4-6 weeks ).  However, there are some cases that would need surgical intervention such as drainage, if the lump becomes very swollen, painful, and causes pressure.  Also, it is important to note that it is prudent to have this seen and worked up by your doctor.  Though unlikely, a malignant condition should still be ruled out (by tests like mammogram and ultrasound).

Regards and God bless.
