Excision of ductal papillomas is done to evaluate more of the tissue to determine if there are any malignant changes present.  A biopsy can only test the area of tissue removed at that time and for a definitive diagnosis the excisional biopsy is recommended.
These intraductal papillomas are not cancerous, nor or they pre-cancerous.  They are considered to be "high risk" lesions as a papillary carcinoma (rare) could be present.
I had excisional biopsy for two intraductal papillomas in Sept 08, and the postop recovery is usually uncomplicated.
It is better to know for sure --- don't risk taking chances. Best wishes ----
