lcis again

lcis again

I am 44 years old and I just had my second lumpectomy in less than two years because a biopsy once again found ALH, adenosis and duct ectasia with microcalcifications. Both times LCIS were found. There are also two other sites with ALH, all on the same side. My sister and mother both had BC, my sister was 42. My sister had genetic testing done and it was negative. I have also had swollen lymph nodes under both arms for well over a year. I had cervical cancer when i was 21 and out of 6 siblings only one has not had cancer. I feel like a sitting time bomb. I know its not recommended to do a mastectomy for LCIS but i was small on my right side to begin with and am noticeably smaller now, not to mention the scars and mental anguish every 6 months. I have very dense breasts and suffer through the stereo biopsies and the wire localizations. How many excisions will a surgeon do before a mastectomy is recommended? Does my history justify a mastectomy? Thank you in advance for your response!

Dear sooz8,  Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is an area (or areas) of abnormal cell growth that increases a person’s risk of developing invasive breast cancer later on in life.
Treatment of LCIS may range from careful observation, to risk-reduction surgery, also called prophylactic mastectomy. Decisions regarding evaluation and treatment are individualized based on the risks for the individual patient.  The discussion of pros and cons for risk-reduction surgery would be best discussed with your doctor or a breast specialist who can discuss in context of your individual situation.  Breast specialists are usually found in association with large acedemic institutions.
