left nipple hurting since biopsy

I had a biopsy done a few years ago and the incision was made in my left nipple.  Since then, I've had a lot of pain that I think is from that...possibly scar tissue, but my doctor says that's not possible and just chocks it up to be pain that I will have to deal with.  I never had any problems until after the biopsy.  The doctor has checked it and said he didn't feel anything and my mamogram doesn't reflect anything either.  It's becoming more and more painful and I don't know what to do.  HELP!!!!

There are a lot of nerves in and around the nipple and probably the biopsy itself or resulting scar tissue formation caused enough disruption so that those nerves are confused and sending inappropriate pain signals to your brain which you may have to just tolerate if you can. It may be getting worse because developing normal fibrocystic changes in the area could be increasing the confusion, so to speak.  That being said, see another breast specialist for a physical examination and a second opinion.  Pain can be surprisingly more tolerable when you feel confident that your body is just confused and not trying to tell you something is wrong.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Dear camfitz:  There could be several possible explanations for the pain you are having.  The nipple and surrounding area have a lot of nerves and these may have gotten irritated.  Irritated nerves can sometimes cause pain that is difficult to manage and can often last beyond when there is any injury remaining.  Scar tissue could also cause discomfort.  You might consider an opinion with a medical breast specialist who can evaluate for a possible explanation.  If one cannot be identified, you might seek assistance from a pain specialist.
