liklihood of IBC after "normal" breast cancer

First off I do have an appointment with my GYN doctor in three days. I had a lumpectomy 10 years ago and since then my nipple has been inverted and I have a scar. A few weeks ago the scar started itching severly. There was nothing there to indicate anything- just a horrible itch. I scratched it until it bled it was so bad. Now it is irritated looking. How often does someone who had breast cancer develope IBC along the scar line or the surgery? Is this likely? Thank you so much and God Bless all of you

Hi there and welcome to our Forum...When you read "2 comments" that included your first post. Now you will see "4 comments" including mine. I am sorry I cannot really help you about the itch you are experiencing, because I don't know what could possibly cause it. Good you are seeing your doctor soon, have you tried to see also a dermatologist? Best wishes.

Thanks so much and I appreciate everything you had to say. How long ago did you have the IBC and how are you doing?

as far as I know it is very uncommon to get IBC after other cancer, although it does happen. You can also get a different other cancer in the same breast but then it's not a recurrence but a new bc.

What you describe with the itching scar may or may not be totally unrelated to your first cancer. I think it is very possible for scars to itch forever and whenever, or never, or sometimes and that is a benign condition.

But to further address your concern re: malignancy, cancer can recur in the skin and by the scar even if it is not IBC, and that includes itching. it also is common that this occurs under the armpit. (I mean when and if it recurs)

So lets say there is a chance that this is not benign then, your symptoms point more than to IBC or any other new cancer more likely to a recurrence of your old cancer. This happens most often near the scar and the axially but can also happen anywhere else, i.e. neck, chest.

I do not know if my comment is of any help to you, and I also want you to know that I have no clue what this may be. Only general knowledge I have picked up along the way, and because I had IBC and am always concerned about skin mets.

Take care,

KATRIN
