lobular invasive breast cancer

My 62-year old sister has just been notified she has a recurrence of breast cancer in her other breast. It has been diagnosed as lobular invasive carcinoma. What is the best treatment for her?  She had been on tamoxifen for five years after her first mastectomy, which was ten years ago?  Thank you.

Dear cynduki:  Technically, cancer arising in the opposite breast is considered a second primary cancer rather than a recurrence.  So, it will be treated as if this is a new cancer.  Surgery will most certainly be recommended, the specifics of which will be determined by your sister's situation.  Additional treatment will be based on the final surgical report as well as her health.
