lobular mass in axilla

lobular mass in axilla

I am 45 with one child (19). In Nov I had a diagnostic mamm and ultrasound on left breast to asses abnormality. The results are confusing:
"Both breasts are extremely dense - scattered diffuse calcification milk of calcium, in upper outer quadrant, some layer on lateral projection" . Also the most concerning finding (to me)is "a lobular mass 10 mm with circumscribed margins in the axilla region... US demonstrates a lymph node at site of mammographic mass".
During the US, the radiologist explained that she was sure I had that lymph node there all along and assured that this is benign. She recommended a follow up mamm in 6 mo.
However the doctor sent me a letter recommending an appointment with a general surgeon for a second opinion.
I have lumpy breasts (sometimes feeling pain and pinches in left breast)and 2 years ago I had a cyst aspired at regular check-up. Also, I have left shoulder - armpit - elbow pain precisely one week before period starts. My mom (72) comforted me by saying she had the same happening to her for years: pain and lumpiness.
Is it possible that the radiologist can misinterpret findings as benign and 6 mo will be too long? How accurate and clear are findings on mamm and us? How fast does bc evolve from "probably benign" evaluations?

Dear DCM:  Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits found within the breast tissue. There are different types of microcalcifications, and based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to a benign (non-cancerous) cause, a

I'll try to help until the doctor answers. Please see the surgeon. Radiologist are wrong sometimes. Doctors and surgeons are wrong sometimes but a second opinion will give you some reassurance. If you go to breastcancer.org there are lots of women there that had cancer that was not detected during mamo or US. Not trying to scare you but just hoping if it is something you can catch it early.

Thank you all for your reply:
Just came back from a general surgeon appt. He immediately biopsied the area - also aspirated a (very large)cyst that apparently my obgy did not even feel - nor the radiologist see during US. Furthermore he questioned the fact that there was even a lymph node involved.
Results will be in only Tuesday - so another few days of stress for me... but the surgeon said I should not be worried. And  the wait is easier because he was recomanded by our family MD: a person me and my husband trust entirely.
If I would have relied on the obgy and/or the radiology report, I would still wonder and fear the unknown... or God knows what else.

To "boninclyde": only now I understand what you mean by:
"Please see the surgeon. Radiologist are wrong sometimes. Doctors and surgeons are wrong sometimes but a second opinion will give you some reassurance."
YOU WERE ENTIRELY RIGHT, so thank YOU again.

Benign - I am so relieved !!!
Diagnostic on core needle biopsy of 4cm: "dense interstitial fibrosis" with no hyperplasia.
However, the surgeon will have another mamm in 6 months and if the lump does not decrease (apparently it did not go away by FNA, even if I do not feel it anymore) he will take it out.
So thanks again for your thoughts, strength and care: I will continue to come back here, read your posts and occasionally write about progress. You all are a source of human kindness and selflessness at moments when it is hard to hold a straight thought.
