long term effects of cancer treatment.

I am a 53 year female and had dense dose chemo which was given as 8 treatment over 16 weeks followed by radiation. I also had a lumpectomy to my left breast ,and had clear nodes.I do know one of the chemos that were used was Taxol along with others.My treatments finished 11/05. My biggest side effects has been my hair which is white and very limp. I had thick beautiful hair before.I also have real trouble losing weight ,joint pain and depression.In general i try to stay positive but i find myself feeling scared and worried.What is the percentage of people who wind up with cancer again and what are the long term effects of treatment. Is it possible to live a long life ?

Are you by any chance on Tamoxifen or one of the Aromatase inhibitors following your other treatments ?? If so this could account for your weight gain as well as the joint pain and possibly some of your other symptoms. I also hear many women say that the side effects from Chemo last as long as a year after treatment. I think it's natural to worry about recurrance but this is something a person has to deal with in their own way ... one way is try not to dwell on it to any great extent; easier said than done I know.  It's definitely possible to live a long life after cancer ... I personally know many Survivors of many years who are living a very normal life. Most of this is up to you and it's not always easy.  If there is a Support Group in your area you might join in a time or two ... much can be gained from the experience of others.    Kindest regards .....
