lump after FNA

lump after FNA

I would be grateful if you could put my mind at rest. I am almost 33 and due to be married shortly. I found a lump in my right breast 1 month ago. My family doctor was not concerned and told me it was most likely a fibroadenoma and to watch and wait. I went privately to a breast clinic where I had an ultrasound and FNA. The consultant radiologist said she could see a collection of cysts together and did a FNA. Some fluid was drained and sent to pathology and came back as benign. The consultant breast surgeon said it was "fibrocystic" and didn't need to see me again. I went back to my family doctor yesterday (4 weeks after finding the lump) as I can still feel the lump. My doctor examined me again and told me to stop worrying as it's still moveable,  seems slightly smaller than when I first saw her and if the consultant had any concerns she would have done further tests. I have asked numerous questions of all concerned but still feel frustrated. I do not understand why I still have a lump after FNA- does it mean that the radiologist only aspirated one cyst and I can feel the "other" cysts? Surely all cysts should have been examined and can't be assumed to be benign? Also, if I have a lump is it because the cyst has solid components and these should be further examined? If it is fibrocystic then why do I have one lump and no other symptoms common in this condition? I am finding it hard to think of anything else at the moment. Many thanks.

Dear Quest10:  Cysts are by definition, benign.  They do feel like lumps.  In general, there is no reason to aspirate them unless they are causing discomfort.  A fine needle aspiration FNA does not remove anything more than a sample of tissue.  A "lump" would still be present after FNA even if it were solid.  A cyst aspiration will usually collapse the cyst (removing the lump).  However, if there is more than one cyst, you would still feel the others.  If you remain concerned, you might benefit from a discussion with the consultant who can explain further the ultrasound results or a third opinion.
