lump under arm found during ultrasound

by AnnaW, Jun 01, 2007 12:00AM
I am 34.  A few years ago a blocked duct (accompanied by nipple discharge) caused a thickening of tissue in my breast.  As time's gone on, the thickening has spread to a wider area.  During a recent visit to the doctor upon feeling a new, hard, little lump near my nipple, she immediately booked an ultrasound for me.  During the ultrasound a lump under my arm was seen...I had never felt it before.  A mammogram and core biopsy are schedule in a couple days.
Due to the breast concerns, do you think the lump under my arm is related and perhaps an indication of stage II+ breast cancer vs a benign tumor or fibroadenoma or something non-cancerous?  It is the lump under my arm (lymph node?) which makes me even more concerned.

Dear AnnaW:  Without reviewing the ultrasound and doing a clinical examination, we cannot speculate on what the lump in the breast or under the arm might be.  An ultrasound is best at differentiating a solid versus cystic (fluid filled) mass.  An ultrasound is not diagnostic regarding differentiating benign and malignant masses.
