lump w/normal mammo/us?

lump w/normal mammo/us?

I'm a 44 yr old mother of 3. Youngest child 11, in surgical menopause.Im concerned because I have a lump at 9:00 right outer breast, (oblong about a centimeter kind of hard) ..have also had milky discharge in only that breast for many years.. My sister was diagnosed with invasice ductal cancer last year by routine mammo....my mammo and u/s are both normal..the reason I am concerned is because I have heard of the type of cancer that occurs in the lobes (ILC) that is more difficult to detect.  .  My dr. felt the lump too..u/s tech said they are not allowed to palpate, but did not detect anything....if the u/s and mammo are both normal...should I pursue this any further? If so...what should I request? My dr wont be back from vacation until the 13th of Dec.
I am also having a ductography monday but dont have much hope for that based on what I've read here and other forums....Thank you very much for your assistance...

Hi,
It is not unusual for a lump to be missed on a mamogram (mammogram) or USG sometimes. What you should do is, go ahead with the ductography to find out the cause of the nipple discharge, and also discuss with your doctor about getting an MRI done. Since there is a definite lump that you and the doctor have felt, and you have a family history of cancer it would be advisable to get an MRI done to be absolutely sure. MRI is more sensitive in detecting cancers than mammograms. Goodluck.

Hi.
The lobular cancer is indeed difficult to detect on the mammogram, but it should appear on the ultrasound. That the tech said "not allowed to palpate" is bad, because that means he will simply follow protocol of where to apply the probe. Did you feel the lump and did he run the probe over it?
I think it is better to go with a biopsy. If it can be felt, it can definitely be biopsied. The MRI is still a preliminary examination and will probably not be able to make a case that the lump should not be biopsied.

Thank you so much for your replies, I will definitely discuss these options with  my Dr.  I'm glad to know that asking for further investigation is not an unreasonable request. The ductogram was successful as far as clarity, the radiologist took a very quick look and said great picture but doesnt see anything...but he will look closer later today. I was glad they were able to get good pictures, though, I understand thats half the battle with this test. Yes the us tech did run the probe over the area where I feel the lump. Thank you once again for your helpful advice.....Annie
