lumpectomy and bloody nipple discharge

lumpectomy and bloody nipple discharge

I recently had a lumpectomy on the 25th of Nov. On the 3rd and 4th of Dec. I began experiencing nipple discharge bloody a dark brown in colour. My follow-up appt was for the 5th. I was diagnosed with having a Phyllodes tumor benign removed from the left upper outer quad.  I mentioned the discharge to my surgeon and he said there should be no reason why I should be having bloody nipple discharge.  He now wants me to have a mamogram (mammogram) as soon as possible.  Should I be concerned? What are some possible reasons why I am bleeding? I always thought I was too young to have a mammogram I'm 28. I am very sore still mostly due to the swelling but  I would not say there is infection.
Please give me some reassurance that I am healing as normal.

Dear jammin:  There are several reasons for bloody nipple discharge, most of which are benign.  However, if this is spontaneous, it needs further investigation.  While mammography is not always the most useful test in young women (because of the dense breast tissue), there is no reason agewise why it couldn't be done.  I would discuss with your surgeon the timing of this so that trauma to your recently operated breast is minimized.
