male vs. female

male vs. female

Is there any difference in focal intraductal hyperplasia (no atypia) in a man versus a woman?  Is there more concern if it's found in a male?  Increased risk of cancer or anything similar?

Hi there.

Intraductal hyperplasia without atypia may not increase one's risk of developing invasive cancer.  The lesions that increases the risk of developing invasive cancer are Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS).  It is very unusual or rare to have this findings in a male since the breast tissues in males are not that developed.  Also, males don't have much estrogen to stimulate the breast ducts.  However, in certain conditions such as liver disease, a male person can develop hi levels of estrogen that may lead to gynecomastia (male breast enlargement).  Definitive breast cancer in males definitely have a poorer prognosis and more stormy course compared to female breast cancer.  Regards and God bless...
