mammogram and ultrasound

mammogram and ultrasound

I had went to the family doctor, as i found a small lump on my left breast at the 2 oclock area.  The lump isnt hard , it is kind of soft and it doesnt move i have had it almost a year now it might have gotten bigger but no much.  So anyways the doctor could feel it, and siad i needed a mammogram and ultrasound, and she has sent me to the specialist whom i go and see at the breast clinic next week.  MY question is that i believe the mammogram didnt show anything and neither did the ultrasound.  So does that mean that the lump is nothing and it is somthing else.  I think when i go to the specialist next week he isgoing to do a biopsy i believe, but is that necessary if nothing showed on the mammogram and ultrasound.  I am 39 years old and i have had a hysterectomy but still have my ovaries.

Dear Shelby38:  When you see the specialist next week, he/she will be able to interpret the results of the mammogram and ultrasound and do a breast examination.  From this information, he/she will be able to better discuss the next steps in terms of additional testing (such as biopsy) or whether this would need a different plan for follow up.  Without knowing the results of the mammogram and ultrasound as well as doing a physical examination, we cannot speculate on whether a biopsy is necessary or not.
