mammogram

mammogram

I am a 46 year old that my rountine mammogram six months ago.  They called me and told me they wanted to also do an ultrasound.  The ultrasound did not show anything abnormal and so they told me to come back for another mammogram in six months.  Well, I had my repeat mammogram about a month ago.  Called my doctor the next day and she said it was fine.  Get a letter today and it says "showed an area that we believe is most likely benign (not cancer) but requires a follow-up mammogram in six months to make sure the area has not changed."  Now I am scared.  Is there something further I should ask them to do, or just wait?  And what could they possibly be seeing?  Six months ago they thought the change could be because of birth control pills I was put on for hot flashes.  I went off them immediately, so that can't be the case this time.  Thanks for any information you can give me.

Dear Louise, They may just want to be keeping a closer watch on this area to see if there may be a change.  Describing something as patchy fibroglandular is a pretty generic description.  Depending on your comfort level with again waiting you could always ask to have your mammograms reviewed by another radiologist for a second opinion.
