mamogram results showing 'nodule'

mamogram results showing 'nodule'

I am 54.  Last year's mamogram (mammogram) showed "increased nodular densities, right breast."  I had to go back for a spot compression and ultrasound.  After that I was told it was a lymph node.  Now this year's mamogram (mammogram) shows a "new nodule" in right breast.  I go back for another spot compression and ultrasound next week.  I am not on hormone replacement therapy which I understand can cause nodules. Is a nodule a precursor to b/c?  My concern is that this is the second year in a row that I've had a problem in my right breast and I am really scared about this.  Is this a common thing during menopause or no relation? Appreciate advice as I am not handling this well. Thanks.

Dear debkate:  A "nodule" is a word that is used by radiologists to describe a finding on a mammogram.  Other words that are sometimes used include "mass" or "density."  In general, they indicate an abnormal finding.  However, their appearance may help to further characterize the abnormality and sometimes make them appear more or less suspicious.  A spot compression will help to clarify the nature of the "nodule" and the results will help to determine the direction for further evaluation, if necessary.  A nodule is not necessarily a precurser to breast cancer.

I had a spot compression and ultrasound today to investiate the "nodule" which showed on my mammogram.  I asked the sonogram tech to see if the radiologist could let me know something of the results today.  He came back to say that the radiologist was too overwhelmed to speak to me, but that he was able to relay to me that the area examined appears to be a 'complex cyst' and that a report would go to my doctor for her to decide what to do next. Waiting is so stressful....  What can you tell my about a complex cyst (he said it was fluid but also some debris)....  Is there a percentage of these that prove to be some type of malignancy?  Thanks for any insight you can offer.
