mamogram results

I am 44 years old and had a mamogram (mammogram) done recently,. They recalled called me because of ? of density versus calcifications.  I am having magnification views done.. I am nervous because my mother developed breast cancer at 48 and passed away at 52 from it.  How serious is this?  Should i be worried?

Dear Cyndi:  Mammography is not a perfect test.  Sometimes, breast tissue can fold over on itself and cause the appearance of a density.  Magnification views will clarify whether there is a density, calcifications or whether it is a clear mammogram.  If there is a density of calcifications, it is likely that you will be referred to a breast surgeon for a biopsy.  This would determine if there is a cancer present.  It is important that you follow through with the recommendations because if there is a problem, earlier identification and treatment will improve the outcome.  Treatments and outcomes for breast cancer have come a long way since your mother was 48.  Hopefully, all will be negative but it is better to be sure.
