Each procedure has its own advantage and disadvantage. A quadrantectomy takes out a smaller portion of the breast and has less post operative complications such as seroma formation and lymphedema. However, quadrantectomy will usually be followed by radiation treatment to the breast which can have skin irritation and other radiation induced injuries. Mastectomy would not require a post operative radiation treatment but would entail the removal of the whole breast. This would result in lesser aesthetic desirability for the breast and higher incidence of seroma formation (fluid accumulation underneath the skin).
In terms of chance of recurrence, both procedures offer the same rates. I suggest you discuss more of the advantage and disadvantages of each procedure with her doctors. I hope everything will turn out fine. Regards and God bless.
