mastectomy with existing implants

mastectomy with existing implants

I had idc in 2002, L breast, had 2 lumpectomies, 9wks radation and 1 yr of tamoxifen. Had to stop tamox due to tumor on ovary. Had a hysterectomy in 2004. Unfortunately I have had multiple lumps reoccur in both breasts, luckily benign. Due to the surgeries and radation the implants that I had from 1995 underwent some strange changes, especially the L one. In 2006 I had "reconstructive surgery" as it was called to replace the implants and remove a good amount of scar tissue. All was going along well. Over the past month I have a mammogram with questionable changes and then a bilateral MRI that indicates some change and areas of activity. Last week I underwent a MRI guided needle loc and a modified lumpectomy. An area of tissue approximately 4" x 1.5" was removed. Results are due in about midweek. After 6 surgeries in six years I have had it, I am seriously considering a bilateral mastectomy and am wondering what would be the results with such, already having implants (saline) in place. I am 49 years old, active and a vegetarian. Other than the above aggravation I am very healthy. Thank you for any advice you can offer. God Bless!

Dear scottishgirl21:  A bilateral mastectomy is an option.  The question you may need to ask is about reconstruction.  Implants can be removed without reconstruction and the scar would look as it would if you never had implants.  If your intention is to do some kind of reconstruction, you should talk with a plastic surgeon (or two) and discuss what could be done and what the expected outcome, given your history, might be.
