maybe breast cancer?

maybe breast cancer?

My daughter is 24 and been having green discharge for over six months and has just had a blood test with a high prolactin level of 34.5 She has had a mirena birth control implant for about 2 years. Should I be concerned about possible breast cancer. I had a malignant carcinoma on my thyroid 3 yrs ago and my mother had her thyroid removed in her teens. My entire family has had some type of cancer. I am very concerned please email if anyone can shed some light on what I should do next.
                                                                      Thank You Trina

Hi there.

I understand your concern.  The best course of action is to have her breasts evaluated by a doctor who may request some imaging tests such as mammogram or ultrasound.  The nipple discharge if the doctor deemed it to be from an infection may also request gram stain and cultures to ascertain what kind of microorganism is causing the infection and administer appropriate antibiotics.  A high prolactin level can also cause this condition called "galactorrhea" which is characterized by breast discharge and irregular menses.  This can be caused in turn by pituitary adenomas which secrete prolactin.  It is also possible that the birth control implant is causing this.  The thyroid cancers in the family line will not predispose her to breast cancer.

There are so many possibilities and I suggest you take this to your doctor.  Regards and God bless...
