medical opinion on mammo screening

My yearly mammo came back 2cm. lobular density deep mid left breast MLO view - multiple additional small nodes noted in both axillae - no new malignant masses - this was given a bi-rad code:2  - but with no more testing and followup in a year - but my health care provider feels I should be seen by a GYN for more tests and possibly a biopsy - what is the thinking in the medical community - is this something I should be concerned about and have more studies done or just do nothing until the next followup? thanks

A BIRADS 2 score means that any findings appeared to be benign such as cysts, etc. With this score it is recommended that the pt. just continue with routine screenings rather than anything more frequent. I'm not sure why seeing you GYN would be recommended as this would not really be his/her area of expertise. If you have questions or concerns regarding the report I suggest that you seek an opinion from a Breast Specialist although I'm not saying this is necessary. You might also have your films read by another Radiologist as a second opinion. I'm curious as to the statement "no new malignant masses" .... have you previously been diagnosed with breast cancer ?? The statement makes me think that there may have been a malignant mass previously.   Regards ....
