menstrual cycle while on tamoxifen

menstrual cycle while on tamoxifen

Hi All ! I have been on Tamoxifen since February 2009 after I went through Surgery/Chemo/radiation. For about  a year I did not get my periods but this year I have been getting them irregularly. Feb-April-August-October. Lasting for two days. Very mild. What could be the significance of this? Can someone help.

Hello,
I think that seeing your gynecologist would be advisable at this time for a full check up.
Menstrual cycles can indeed become erratic if you are taking hormonal drugs such as tamoxifen. It is also very difficult to differentiate this from biologic menopause, but there are tests to confirm if what you are experiencing are really due to menopause or caused by the hormonal drug .These tests are called FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) levels in the blood.
Also women over the age of 45 who receive chemotherapy, will become amenorrheic (meaning that menstrual periods will stop) For many, this cessation of menstrual periods will represent permanent menopause, but a minority will have return of menstruation either regular or irregular in the future.I have read that some women restart regular menstruation one or two years after completing Chemotherapy.
Best wishes to you...
