microcalcification in breast

by mcd44, Sep 17, 2009 12:36PM
If a radiologist reports that a new cluster appears to be benign and also recommends that an additional mamogram (mammogram) be performed in 6 months, could a biopsy be performed when the subject has two immediate aunts maternal and one aunt paternal who had breast cancer?

This discussion is related to code 4 microcalcifications.

Yes, you can.... I did that. I was found to have a cluster of microcalcifications in my right breast in 2005. And yet another formation of calcifications in almost the exact same location in 2007. I was told... in both cases, that I could either wait the 6 month period for a follow up mammogram or opt for a biopsy. In both situations, I chose to go with the biopsy. Personally, I don't like the uncertainty of a 6 month wait, mainly because my concerns were just like yours...
I have an extensive family history of Cancer, including 2 aunts with Breast Cancer and my sister having had Ovarian Cancer. So, you do a choice in this... good luck.

I had the same thing happen to me in Dec 08.  The said I needed to be seen again in six months.  So in June 09 I had second mammo, July I had biopsy because it came back BIRAD 4 this time.  August 25, 2009 I had a mastectomy.  No family history or risk factors.  I would demand a biopsy.  I was lucky and it was all DCIS, but it was extensive and high grade.  The possibility that it could have become invasive in those six months just gives me chills even now.  Don't wait, have the biopsy.  It doesn't hurt and you will know one way or the other.  I will be praying for you and a good outcome.

Thank you both for your response. I left a request for the md for a biopsy.
