microcalcification

My last mammogram report came back with the following findings:  Pleomorphic calcifications are identified in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast, one of them demonstrates layering and the rest are clustering and are somewhat suspicious for malignancy, needs to be further evaluated with tissue biopsy.  Can you explain in plain English?

Five years ago I had an excisional biopsy for microcalcifications -- benign thankfully.

Pleomorphic means having many shapes and when microcalcifications are clustered or grouped in certain patterns they are a cause for concern. They are an indication of some abnormality within the breast tissue and always require a biopsy to determine the cause. It's not always due to a malignancy though as you know from your past experience. I would hope that an appointment has been made with a Surgeon and that you will proceed with the recommended biopsy.
