microcalcifications

A recent mammogram found calcifications in my right breast. After a diagnotic followup mammogram, the radiologist wants to do a stereotactyle biopsy, characterizing the calcifications as "indeterminate"  My question is what percentage of calcifications biopsied are found to be benign and not DCIS or LCIS>

Dear birdiegirl, Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits found within the breast tissue. There are different types of microcalcifications, and based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to a benign (non-cancerous) cause, a "cluster" of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor.   Decision to recommend biopsy is based on several factors including the degree of concern regarding the individual mammogram findings.

how did your biopsy turn out?  I am waiting on my OB office to schedule a biopsy for me next week.  the Radiologist suggested a biopsy after a mag. mamorgam reveled micro calcification.  I was so shocked I couldnt think of questions.  He said I had several (no actual number) calcifications in the upper left quadrant of my left breast.  I am 43 years old and have had a yaerly mamogram (mammogram) since age 35.  No history of breast cancer in family.  Mother died at 73 with bladder cancer.  I am scared to death as well!  Anxious to hear about your results!  Thanks!

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I'm 41 and had my annual screening 4/7/06. They saw microcalcifications on my rt breast only and then I had a magnified mammogram on 4/11. I had a stereotactic core needle biopsy on 4/17. On 4/20 my Dr. said I have grade 2 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC). On May 8, I'm having a lumpectomy to remove the rest and also a sentinel node biopsy. My Dr. has already told me that I will need radiation for 6 weeks, starting sometime after my surgery. The lymph node biopsy results will determine if I need chemo or not. Also, the cancer cells will be tested for hormone receptors. Hope this info helps someone. No one in my family has ever had breast cancer. My Dad just passed away a couple months ago of lung cancer. (It's been a rough year so far.)
