I have just had my first mammogram, requireing follow up ultrasound, looking at my xray, they have circled 2cm rounded cluster on my right breast upper outer right,I have dense , but most of all the other tissue looks the same, I have no lumps that the Dr couldnt feel nor I or my husband, is this area a cluster of microcalcifications that could lead to cancer. I have no breast pain, I am so scared.
Hi,
What is your age? Could you post us the exact report?
Microcalcifications are tiny specks of calcium in the breast tissue that need to be investigated further to rule out cancer.
The microcalcifications if large or clustered are usually biopsied for a confirmed diagnosis. Most calcifications are usually benign.
The usual plan of follow up is a regular breast self exam, a clinical evaluation in 6 months and a mammogram every 6 months or annually or as your doctor advises.
Carry on regular breast self examinations and report any abnormal features to your doctor.
Let us know about how you are doing and do post us the reports .
Dont worry about the calcifications growing or they being cancerous, relax and just keep your appointment with your doctor regularly. It would only help to remain calm and reach a confirmed diagnosis.
Let us know if you have any other doubts and post us about how you are doing.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Microcalcifications occur normally in breast tissue. They become a concern when they are grouped in certain patterns. Evidently those seen on your mammogram did not exibit enough concern to have more than a follow-up mammogram as recommended. The 6 mo.repeat is good medical care at this point. You certainly should follow the recomendation but NOT be overly concerned by this finding.
