microcalcifications

I had a mammo. a few weeks ago and was told that microcalcifications were seen and that they wanted a few more pictures up close.  The pictures were taken and I was then told that they were not suscpious and to come back in six months for another mammo. to compare.  Should I be scared because this situation has consumed my every minute. What if this becomes cancer in six months. Should I have a biopsy or a mri. Or just be calm and wait it out until I have the mammo. in six months.  Am I overreacting?  Help!

Hi,

What is your age? Could you post us the exact report?

Microcalcifications are tiny specks of calcium in the breast tissue that need to be investigated further to rule out cancer.

The microcalcifications if large or clustered are usually biopsied for a confirmed diagnosis. Most calcifications are usually benign.

The usual plan of follow up is a regular breast self exam, a clinical evaluation in 6 months and a mammogram every 6 months or annually or as your doctor advises.

Carry on regular breast self examinations and report any abnormal features to your doctor.

Let us know about how you are doing and do post us the reports .

Dont worry about the calcifications growing or they being cancerous, relax and just keep your appointment with your doctor regularly. It would only help to remain calm and reach a confirmed diagnosis.

Let us know if you have any other doubts and post us about how you are doing.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Microcalcifications occur normally in breast tissue. They become a concern when they are grouped in certain patterns. Evidently those seen on your mammogram did not exibit enough concern to have more than a follow-up mammogram as recommended. The 6 mo.repeat is good medical care at this point. You certainly should follow the recomendation but NOT be overly concerned by this finding.
