multi focal lobular cancer breast

Lumpectomy + Axillary clearance in 55 year old.
Pre op MRI showed 2 small foci of cancer in upper outer quadrant
Specimen shows I dumbell shaped tumor 29 mm and two other foci of cancer (all lobular grade II) few mm away from the primary tumor. Margins all clear by more tha 5 mm. 16 nodes clear.
Patient not keen on Mastectomy...should she be advised mastectomy or adjuvant Chemo/Radio?

I had invasive lobular carcinoma. I had my breast removed. I had chemo and radiation. I'm having my other breast removed before it gets cancer. She should be advised on all of the above by her doctors. And then she should make a decision she feels comfortable with. Best of luck.

According to the ACS this type of cancer can be treated in the same manner as Invasive Ductal Cancer .... in a breast conserving manner. Since each case is specific to itself the treatment following surgery would be at the discretion of the Oncologist who has all the details concerning the case. If mastectomy were the preferred surgical procedure it would have been done rather than the lumpectomy in the first place. Some women prefer mastectomy thinking that they are forever free from the possibiity of breast cancer .... this is unfortunately NOT necessarily the case.    Regards .....
