multifocal invasive lobular carcinoma treatment options

by Mel in LA, Jun 01, 2007 12:00AM
My right breast was diagnosed with stage 2,1 positive node out of 14, ER+, PR+, HER neu negative invasive lobular carcinoma.  The second lumpectomy had clear margins but the tumor measured 4.3 cm.  It is labeled multifocal.

I have already had chemo and an MRI which did not show any cancer in the either breast.

Statistics state that lumpectomy with chemo and radiation or mastectomy with chemo are the same for reoccurrence and it is a personal choice which to choose. I am concerned that the statistics may not be the same for multifocal lobular cancer.

I need to decide whether to do a mastectomy or both followed by radiation or just do radiation only. I do not recurrence or new cancer to show again especially on the radiated side.  I need to know if there is a difference in recurrence or new cancers in each treatment option so I can decide.  Also, I need some feedback on whether anyone has done the nipple sparing mastectomy with a free flap after radiation and if there were complications and how it looks after time passes.

I once read that lobular cancer was more likely to spread to the other breast than ductile cancer.  I don't know if that is true or not or about recurrance statistics. best to discuss with your oncologist and surgeon.  Check out MD Anderson's site and www.breastcenter.com for information on mastectomies and reconstruction.

i had a right radical mastectomy and wish I would have done the double.  If you have the mastectomy; make sure they do a skin sparing surgery so as to not limit your options for reconstruction.  Also, if you wait till after radiation for reconstruction there is a risk your skin will be too damaged for reconstruction.

I didn't have an option, I needed a flat surface for radiation so I'm just waiting till I can see the plastic surgeon to see if reconstruction is an option; lopsided for now.

sorry i got off on a tagent, hope I gave you some useful info
