multiple fibroadenoma

multiple fibroadenoma

Im 22 years old and i just had my right breast be checked because of a lump that I and the doctor found out 2 weeks ago. The sonographic evaluation shows multiple, vari-sized, wider than tall,non-calcified, hypoechoic solid nodules, location and sizes of which are as follows:

12 o'clock, inner (zoneA)-14x8mm
1o'clock, mid (zone B) 13x 5 mm
2 0'clock, mid (zoneB) 33x19 mm (largest and with macrolobulated margin) 13x9mm,13x9mm
3 o'clock position, outer(zone C) 20x11 mm (with lobulated margin)
9 o'clock position, mid (zone B) 10x6mm

The rest of the fibro-glandular elements and soft tissues are intact.
No demonstrable ductal ectasia, nipple retraction or skin thickening
The retromammary area and axillary tail region are unremarkable.

Impression:
-SOLID NODULES WITH BENIGN SONOGRAPHIC FEATURES, LARGEST IN THE 2 O'CLOCK POSITION
RIGHT BREAST CONSIDER FIBROADENOMAS.
This is exactly the result of my sonogram test. Please help me understand this result because my doctor went for a 2 week vacation so I had to get hold of the result and show her once she return. I really wanted to know what it means though I have read a lot about fibroadenoma on this site. Please help me.

Dear tinaletis:  A fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth. Fibrooadenomas are distinct on a mammogram or ultrasound and when aspirated - no fluid comes out. As long as the doctor is sure it is a fibroadenoma, there is no need to remove the lump. In 50% of the cases fibroadenomas will go away on their own within 5 years. In others, the life of a fibroadenoma is about 15 years. In teenagers - the tendency is not to remove fibroadenomas. In middle age women, the tendency is to remove the fibroadenomas to be sure they are, in fact, fibroadenomas.  So depending on the individual situation, putting the findings in context, a suspected fibroadenoma might be biopsied to be sure of what it is. An ultrasound cannot always make a diagnosis of fibroadenoma with certainty.  You really will need to discuss these results with your doctor specifically in regards to your situation.
