neuropathy following lumpectomy/sentinel node biopsy

neuropathy following lumpectomy/sentinel node biopsy

I cannot find significant information specific to nerve pain ("burning", painful sensation when touched - even clothing hurts) that has been present since lumpectomy/sentinel node biopsy in December.  I was able to control pain with Neurontin, but discontinued after a month due to bad side effects of dizziness, slurred speech, memory loss.  Back to my pre-op mental state but unfortunately neuropathy has returned with a vengence - from just under sentinel incision to surgery incision on lower portion of breast.  I have ten more days remaining of a 33-day radiation regimen.  Could the radiation be making neuropathy worse?  Can I expect this to go away at some point?  The condition is interfering with every day functioning - clothing of any kind is a constant irritant.  Oxycod. takes the edge off, but does not relieve problem - luckily I do not experience side effects from this med. (I'm an accountant and it's tax season!)  What can I expect to help short-term and long-term?  Should I seek a specific referral to some kind of specialist?

It certainly will lessen in time and no doubt the Radiation could be complicating the situation. You might ask if there is another drug besides Neurontin that might help the pain without so many side effects. Unfortunately most drugs have untoward effects but some more than others. You might consider a consult at a  Pain Management Clinic and get some additional help there. Other than that it's mostly time.  Regards ...

Its funny how no one tells you this stuff before you have the procedures done.  There should be some kind of book to tell you what to expect when..........  I had terrible burning and I too thought that even my clothes hurt me.  I don't know how much of it was neuropathy and how much was anxiety.  I did not have any radiation, but the burning sensation contined for quite some time.  I still get tingling in my extremities, that definitely is related to anxiety. Mine definitely subsided when I took anitanxiety medicine.  Pain relievers did very little to alleviate it.  Regards
