new lump

I had breast cancer in 2003 and then thyroid cancer in 2006. I have had no breast problems since 2003. I have had many CT scans, PET scans, MRIs, blood tests, and mammograms since. I just had a PET scan in March of this year and a mammogram in June. I had blood tests in September. Last week I felt something new near my original surgery site. I had an ultrasound done and the radiologist could not find anything. He said all he could see was a line of scar tissue and a small area that couldn't be biopsied and didn't appear like cancer. I am having an MRI done next week to see what is going on with this new lump. It feels squishy, not hard like my last one, but I am worried about what it is and if it might be lobular cancer. It is pretty high up almost not in my breast at all, about 3 inches from the nipple. Sometimes it almost disappears depending on what position my arm is in. I have lost 24 pounds since March. Any thoughts?

Hi,
This could be secondary to the breast surgery you most probably had for your breast cancer. It could be scar tissue or fat necrosis. The MRI will be able to confirm it. There are chances, though little, that you have had a recurrence of the breast cancer as recurrence rates are maximum in the first 2-3 years and then gradually decline. But still it would be best to wait for the MRI report to come in to say anything with certainty. Also report the weight loss you have been experiencing to your doctor. Are you eating properly, and could the weight loss be related to your anxiety about the lesion. Do not worry and just take every day as it comes. Goodluck.
