nipple change

nipple change

I had a digital mammogram in mid-August which stated: "the breasts remain moderatedly dense, mildly nodular and asymetric.  This is especially true centrally in the right breast.  There are also widespread calicifications in both breasts some lying in small groups."   (I understand the significance of calcifications.)

Last week, I noticed that the nipple on my right breast (not the areola) seems longer than it has been (almost like it's been stretched) and sags downward.  It will contract to a "normal" state when stimulated or when I'm cold.  I don't notice any pain, dimpling, discharge, rash, or scaly skin around or on the areola or nipple.  The appearance is just so different than what it's ever been which is what got my attention.  The left nipple and areola appear "normal".

I'm scheduled for another mammogram in 6 months just to compare it to the August film since that was the first digital mammogram I've had.  Should I be concerned about the nipple change and ask for another mammogram now, or is this change common in someone entering menopause (I'm 52)?

Thanks, in advance, for your comments/advice.

Hi.

This change in your nipple may not portend to anything significant.  The sagging of the nipples can indeed come from hormonal imbalances from a person entering menopause, and the changes may really not be observed in both nipples.  The contraction of the nipples in reaction to cold environment is also a normal occurrence.

I would suggest that you continue with the surveillance of your breasts through mammogram.  The more significant changes in the breast to watch out for is that of skin dimpling or any signs of swelling or inflammation.  Regards.
