nipple discharge

by msbug1, Jan 17, 2008 01:31PM
Hello,

When doing a self exam last month I noticed a milky discharge from my left breast.  I had a baby in September and am bottle feeding only.  I have only noticed the discharge on one side.   I called my physician and was told it could be "residual" from having the baby.  I am just concerned since it is only on one side.  How long it is normal to have residual breastmilk and why would it only occur from one breast?

Hi,

You should not worry about the nipple discharge too much. It is ok if it is coming from one breast only and not both.

A nipple discharge is significant and needs to be investigated further if it -
- is persistent,
- comes out without squeezing the breasts or any stimulation,
- is bloody or foul smelling or altered,
- is associated with a lump, nipple or skin changes etc.

This is most probably as your physician tells you due to the clogged milk ducts. A time frame cannotbe specified to when the discharge would stop.

Do let us know if you have any more doubts and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
