nipple lump

nipple lump

I posted a question the other day about this and I'm sorry to keep posting but I'm very worried.  This past Monday, I woke up with a very sore nipple, I thought I would wait a few days and see if it would go away.  I'm 47 years old and experiencing some perimenapausal symptoms.  I also notices a red lump that has a small white spot on it on my right nipple.  I got really worried about it yesterday and called my doctor who order a diagnostic mamogram (mammogram), I had my last one done a year ago November with normal results.  I have an appointment for Jan 5 and I'm now very anxious about this.  Can someone give me an idea of what this could be?  It's very painful to the touch.  I've read up on blocked milk ducts but I thought I was too old for those and only new nursing mothers get them...my youngest is 12.
Can someone direct me to a forum where I could post on this or is this the right one?  Thanks for your help.

I thought I had responded to your previous post but I may have answered someone else with a similar problem. Breast cancer is rarely associated with painful lumps, etc. You have done the correct thing by contacting your Physician about this. I thought before you stated that you had trouble in the past with "pimple-like" areas on the breast and forgive me if that was someone else. Did your Physician actually see you and examine your breast or just order the mammogram?? I would hope that he/she did a clinical exam but perhaps not. Milk ducts can become infected or blocked at any time. If you are concerned about breast cancer then you are posting in the right place ... if you like you could post on other Forums as well; Family Medicine or OB/GYN ... just another couple of options.  Kindest regards .....

Thank you for your reply.  No the doctor did not examin me, I just talk to his assisant over the phone.  I just didn't think it could be a milk duct because everything I read on the internet is mostly related to nursing mothers and I'm way past that stage.  Do this block ducts ever go away on their own?

Hi,

Sometimes they do, using warm compresses.  I would like to advise you, though to have someone actually look at what's going on so that you may get a better idea of what's going on sooner than your mammogram appointment.  Even if the nurse can check it out, she should be able to give you a good idea of what's up.

Please feel free to ask as many questions as you need to!

Warmly,

Chris

Whatever it is, it popped when I got out of the shower this morning.  It feels about 90% percent better than it did the last couple days.  It was like what comes out of a pimple.  My friend looked at it and thought it was a blocked duct on the nipple because she has had them before.  Thanks for your response, if you have any other comments, let me know, I really appreciate it.  I'm still going for the diagnostic mamogram (mammogram) on the 5th, I'm due for one anyways.

So it was more than likely what you described ... a pinple-like occurance. You are wise to go ahead with the mammogram since you say you're due for one anyway. I think in the future though I would insist on being seen & examined before any test is ordered. Although it isn't true this time; it might be a waste of time, money and resources not to mention  unnecessary exposure to radiation for you.  Regards ...

You are right, I thought also I should be seen by the doctor first.  My ob/gyn delivers alot of babies and I'm thinking about switching to someone who is just doing gyn because many of my appointments have been rescheduled do to a delivery.  Thanks again for your response to my post.

You might want to consider a Family Practice Physician if you would like to keep your present OB/GYN.
