non invasive breast cancer & lymph node removal

my sister underwent a lumpectomy this morning, they found cancer cells in her lymph nodes and I was told the lymph nodes were removed, my question is: since she had non invasive duct type breast cancer, how did it get into the lymph nodes and what can i expect to find out next with regards to her future?

Thank you,

Vicki N.

Hi,

The chances of this happening are very less. The cancer would only spread via lymphatics and involve lymph nodes - the surrounding area is not likely to be involved.

You should consult your breast specialist or oncologist about this - so that you can clear doubts in detail.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

Regards.

Regarding a new question about the breast cancer, since there was cancer in the lymph nodes, could it have spread to the surrounding area that was not removed along with the lymph nodes?

Hi,

jagdip is correct about the non-invasive type of breast cancer not spreading to the adjacent tissue - but it does have chances of recurrence and spread via the lymphatic system.

Let us know what your breast specialist and oncologist advise and what do they suggest about the further plan of management in your case.

Discuss all your doubts in detail with your doctor.

Let us know if you have any other queries and post us about how you are doing.

Regards.

Hi Vicki: The non invasive part relates to the breast tissue. The cancer cells can travel thru the lymph system even though they have not invaded additional breast tissue. She will now be referred to an Oncologist and be evaluated for whatever additional treatment is required. This won't be done until the Pathology reports are complete. For now it's a waiting game. You should go with her to the Oncologist unless she has some objection. It's always good to have an extra pr. of ears as well as the support.
