pain between shoulder blades

pain between shoulder blades

I had 2 lumpectomies within 2 weeks of each other 18 months ago.  They did a sentinel lymph and 33 radiation treatments.  Right after the first surgery I had a very severe pain between my shoulder blades but just thought it was due to just having breast surgery.  The pain is still with me almost constantly. Most of the time it is a moderate pain that starts from under my arm and goes to my shoulder blades. When I mentioned to my onocologist months after my surgery, they said this was normal.

I would have thought by now this would be gone.  Someone told me the maybe a nerve or muscle could have be nicked during surgery. Is there anything I can do to relieve this pain and should I be worried.

Thanks,

blantonbb

Dear blantonbb:  It is possible that surgery could cause some tissue changes that could result in discomfort.  However, it is also possible that this pain could have other causes.  You should bring this to the attention of your doctor who can evaluate your pain and determine what additional testing and/or treatment would be indicated.  Your surgeon would likely be the person best equipped to help you with this.
