painful lumps underarm

painful lumps underarm

I am experiencing significant pain from swollen lumps under my arms.  They materialized overnight.  They did not improve over the course of the day and this morning another lump has appeared under one of my arms.  (I now have 3 lumps) They are very painful to touch.  Had a mamogram (mammogram) two months ago - results were negative.  I have not been sick, have not had a cold.  Did get a colonoscopy about two weeks ago, only because of family history - not because of symptoms.  Should I be concerned?  I do have significant family history of breast cancer.  My mother is a survivor - had breast cancer twice, cousin on my father's side - died at 45 from breast cancer.  My mothers' sister and my mother's aunt have had breat cancer.

Dear cardgal:  Most breast cancer is not painful and lymph nodes under the arm might well be inflammed for another reason.  However, given your family history, it may make sense for you to see your doctor to determine the reason for these swollen lymph nodes.
